December holidays will soon be upon us. The best time to prepare is now, in November. There are businesses that prepare for the season much earlier, but November is a good time for everyone across the board.

While some things may vary according to location, the general experience among Kenyan small businesses in December is characterized by more spending and a lot of human traffic as schools close and corporate activities slow down.

For most businesses, at least the small ones, this period can result in a lot of sales and profit. But only if you are strategic about your approach. Here are a few tips that can help you with that.

  1. Decide on the main product

Just because there is an influx of people, doesn’t mean that they will buy everything. Decide on which product will be the main seller for you. This can draw attention to the others. If there is no single product, pick a category instead. Bundle it up with other products, give out some offer or discounts if the numbers allow and don’t forget to remind people that you can ship it for free for them using Sendy Fulfillment.

  1. Increase your stock

If you are planning to heavily promote and sell a product during the holiday period, make sure you have enough of it in stock. There is nothing worse than running out of stock for items that are in demand. Not only does it cost you in the short term, but it can be hard to win back the trust of lost customers who will go away thinking you don’t stock enough.

Of course it’s not a good idea to overstock on items that won’t sell as much as you’d want, and it is important to do your research well. However, if you anticipate that you are going to need more stock, worry not, Sendy’s Fulfillment Center is for times like these. When space is not a hindrance, you can stock all you want without any worry.

  1. Prepare early

Prepare for how busy the period can get for you by getting all the equipment and support needed. If taking orders and responding to DMs will spike and be overwhelming, consider getting a temporary staff member to help you out. Will there be a number that you will be communicating with or a code that will get them a bonus? Test these early and communicate to your customers way ahead of time.

  1. Spread the word

Lastly, tell the world about your upcoming offers. This can be done towards the end of November and throughout December. Invest some money into social media ads or even Google ads. Post it on your Whatsapp status, create content about it and post on your channels. Get people excited about your business, or at least curious enough to visit your page and inquire.
