A lot of people think that trends only have to do with “trending topics” that get tongues wagging and make people famous while embarrassing others. While this is true, it is only a small part of technology. 

For starters, trends - in the context of online platforms- were created to bring together people who have a common interest in particular topics. The more the people, the higher up the list the topic goes. So how do you break into this space, without having the whole country talking about your online business?

Well, you need to understand that trends are much more than the list you see. Your business can still benefit from the trending topic without it being a trend itself. Here are a few ways you can do it.

  1. Trend-jacking

Put simply, trend-jacking is the process of riding on a particular trending topic and getting some of the exposure your way. Because people will click on a trend to see what is the latest, posting your business with the trend can pull some people towards your profile and even get you a customer or two. However, take caution not to spam a trend. People hate that and they’ll hate your business for wasting their time by flooding the conversation with content that does not add value. It happens on twitter a lot. 

The smart way to do it is to find a relevant trend and see how you can contribute to it. Say, for example, there is a shortage of a certain commodity but you have it in stock. Or have it cheaper compared to what people are complaining about, if it is a price trend. Don’t just hop on every trend. You’ll come off as untrustworthy. Only stick to topics that are relevant to your business. If possible, only use your business account for this activity. Your personal account is free to participate in all the conversations and trends that may interest you but keep the activities separate.
